VEU Rebate: Gas to Electric Heating & Cooling

Most of the work we do across the Mornington Peninsula is rebate work: taking out old gas heating and putting in efficient reverse cycle air conditioning under the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program. This page explains how the rebate works, who’s eligible and what happens from quote to install, in plain language.

What is the VEU rebate?

The Victorian Energy Upgrades program is run by the Victorian Government to cut household energy use and emissions. When an eligible upgrade is installed, it creates energy efficiency certificates. Those certificates have a value, and that value is passed on to you as a discount on the job. It isn’t a cheque in the mail or a form you claim back later: the discount comes straight off your price.

Who is eligible?

The program is open to Victorian households and businesses. To qualify, the new system has to be an approved, high-efficiency reverse cycle air conditioner that provides both heating and cooling, installed through an accredited provider. The biggest discounts apply when you’re replacing an existing gas ducted heater with ducted reverse cycle, because that’s the upgrade that saves the most energy. Replacing a gas wall heater or room heater with a split system can also qualify, for a smaller amount.

How much is it?

The amount depends on the size of the new system, what’s being replaced and the current value of the certificates, which moves with the market. That’s why we work out your exact figure at the site visit and show it on your written quote, rather than guessing over the phone.

How the process works with us

1. Site visit and eligibility check. Bailey visits, looks at your existing gas heater and the house, and confirms whether the upgrade qualifies.
2. Written quote with the discount applied. You see the full price, the rebate amount and what you pay.
3. Installation. We decommission and remove the old gas ducted heater and ductwork, then install your new, fully electric heating and cooling system. A licensed electrician completes the electrical work. Most ducted installs take a full day to two days.
4. Gas decommissioning. As licensed gas fitters, we disconnect and cap the gas line to the old heater and issue the compliance certificate.
5. Paperwork. We fill out all the paperwork and lodge it for you, then invoice you with the rebate already taken off. You only ever pay the final amount, so you’re never out of pocket waiting on a rebate.

Things to know before you book

• Leave the old heater in place. The rebate depends on the old heater being decommissioned as part of the job, so don’t remove it yourself first.
• You can keep other gas appliances. Only the heater is replaced. Your gas hot water or cooktop can stay connected.
• Hot water has its own rebate. Heat pump hot water systems have a separate VEU discount, and we can quote both together.
• The rules get reviewed. The government updates the program from time to time. We keep up with the changes so your quote reflects the current rules.
